Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun, yesterday
took the oath of office for a second term in office, amidst loud cheers from
thousands supporters. Amosun, who adorned a native attire, took the
oath of office by 11: 48 am for another term of four years as governor of
Ogun State.
The oath of office was administered on Governor
Amosun by the Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Olatokunbo Olopade, amid heavy
security within and outside the stadium provided by a combined team of the
army, police, operatives of the Department of State Security Service (DSS) and
Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSDC) among others.
Earlier, the oath of office was administered on
his deputy, Princess Yetunde Onanuga, who was accompanied to the inauguration
ground by her husband, Abiodun Onanuga, and children.
In his inauguration speech, Amosun said the
renewal of his mandate by the people of the state is a reflection of their
confidence in his administration during the first tenure.
According to him, the inaugural ceremony is
neither for the celebration of the party’s victory alone nor just for the
administering of the oath of office, but a time to celebrate “unity, freedom,
development and progress” recorded in the last four years.
He noted that it is equally a moment to renew
vows to move the state further on the path of growth, development and
perceptible progress.
The governor reiterated his determination to fast
– track the developmental processes of the state, and expressed the confidence
that with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and in the state, it will evoke
the much-awaited synergy required to move Ogun State forward.
According to him, it would translate to “adequate
and prompt payments of salaries of civil servants in the state, creation of new
jobs, better condition of service and standard of living for the generality of
the people of the state among others.”
He acknowledged that the successes recorded in
his first tenure would not have been possible without the support and
cooperation of the people of the state, and appealed for same as he begins his
second tenure.
Amosun said: “Today, I have taken a solemn oath
to the good people of Ogun State and I wish to make a further commitment that
we will leave Ogun State radically and demonstrably better and more prosperous
than we met it.
“We will leave Ogun State where taps are running
in all homes; where factories and workshops are powered with regular supply of
electricity; where health facilities are well equipped and properly maintained
by highly qualified and well trained staff; where schools are functional, light
rail links the state from town to town and where law and order is sustained.”
He charged the people to sustain the prevailing
spirit of harmony in the state, which according to him, had ensure peace and
development in the last four years, while pledging his administration’s
commitment to creating needed favorable environment for its
socio-economic development.
Among the dignitaries that graced the occasion
were the wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Bola; the Akarigbo of
Remoland, Oba Adeniyi Sonariwo; the Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle and
Chief Ayo Adebanjo.
