The Ondo Government says destitute people removed from the streets on Tuesday would be catered for in rehabilitation centres across the State.
The state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Yemi Mahmud-Fasanminu, announced this shortly after the evacuation of beggars, lunatics, destitute people and vagrants in the 18 local government areas. She reiterated government’s commitment to the evacuation and rescuing of beggars, destitute people and homeless children from the streets to forestall criminal activities in disguise. Mahmud-Fasanminu said the evacuation was also geared towards keeping the metropolis `sane’ as well as ensuring that structures that beautify the cities were not destroyed by the activities of such people. According to her, findings reveal that criminals are disguising as beggars, destitute people and homeless children to perpetrate crime in the state. “What we are doing is that after treatment and rehabilitation, they can be re-integrated into the socio-economic aspects of life. “The Evacuation and Rescuing Team would begin a massive and periodic raiding of beggars and destitute places to help strengthen the security situation in the state. “We will continue to do what we can do to make sure that they do not constitute security threats to the society”, she was quoted as saying by NAN. Mahmud-Fasanminu said government was also collaborating with stakeholders to identify and close down illegal orphanages as well as eradicate child trafficking in the state. She urged parents and guardians to extend support to their physically challenged kids and wards to give them hope in life and keep them off evil in the streets
